Switzerland's relationship with cash, including banknotes and coins, remains steadfast, highlighted by a recent survey conducted by the Swiss National Bank. This enduring preference for physical currency is notable, especially considering the increasing popularity of mobile payment applications and the ongoing global conversation about moving towards a cashless society.

This survey sheds light on how, despite technological advancements and the convenience offered by digital payment methods, the Swiss population continues to hold a strong preference for traditional monetary forms as we read in Reuters.

In the Swiss market, cash is not just a relic of the past but a dominant payment medium, especially in businesses that deal directly with customers. This includes a wide array of establishments, from local shops to restaurants, where cash transactions are more common than those made through digital platforms like Google Pay.

The survey indicates that an overwhelming majority of these face-to-face businesses, approximately 92%, accept cash. This is significantly higher compared to the adoption rate of app-based payments, which stands at 59%. This discrepancy highlights the enduring trust and reliance on physical currency in the Swiss consumer market.

Contrasting sharply with the situation in Switzerland is the experience of countries like Sweden, which are on the forefront of embracing a cashless society. Sweden's journey towards reducing the dependence on physical currency offers a stark contrast to the Swiss scenario, where cash remains a preferred mode of transaction.

However, it's important to note that mobile app payments in Switzerland are gaining traction. Their acceptance has seen a notable increase, from 40% in 2021 to a higher figure, now surpassing the use of conventional credit and debit cards. This shift indicates a gradual change in the payment landscape of Switzerland, balancing traditional preferences with modern digital solutions.

For Swiss businesses that operate in non-face-to-face settings, such as online sales, email, or telephone-based services, the survey found that bank transfers are the most popular method of receiving payments.

This preference for bank transfers is followed by invoicing and, interestingly, cash payments, highlighting the diverse payment preferences in different business contexts.

This diversity in payment methods showcases the flexibility and adaptability of the Swiss business sector in catering to various customer preferences, whether they are engaging in traditional in-person transactions or navigating the digital marketplace.

The persistence of cash in the Swiss economy is not just an economic choice but also a cultural and political topic. In Switzerland, banknotes have traditionally been a popular choice even for large purchases like cars.
